Sue Dunsmuir- Director
Sue is the Director of Rubble Ltd, with over 16 years’ experience working as a graphic designer, in the publishing and advertising industries or direct to business. Sue’s experience spans a variety of media both traditional and new, including print, interactive, tv and web design.
Education
Sue graduated as a Graphic Designer in 1995 after three years full-time, with a foundation certificate in Visual Art and a diploma in Graphic Art and Design.
Experience
After 4 years working for a well-known publishing business based in Auckland, Sue gained experience in print and new media design (web and multimedia). She then ventured to the UK (the typical kiwi OE) and spent three years in London working as an interactive designer for award winning advertising agencies who focused in new media (web design etc). During this time Sue became very specialised in interface and web design so on her return to NZ worked as a freelancer to a web design company before starting Rubble in 2003.
“NZ was a much smaller market than what I’d come from, and I saw the opportunity to offer a service direct to small business, drawing on all the knowledge and experience I’d gained in the UK. New Zealanders have to be innovative because of our limited population, and NZ small businesses are no exception. I saw the benefit of using my experience and knowledge to make it easy for small businesses ‘look good’ and reflect their professionalism in the work we do.
"Initially Rubble specialised in web design, hosting and domains – making it easy for small businesses to get on the web. Pretty early on though, we realised many of the businesses we were working with needed more, so it was great to draw on the print knowledge too, and offer branding, logos, business cards, flyers, brochures etc.
"Now we’ve almost become a one stop shop for graphic design, marketing and advertising resources over all sorts of mediums. I liked the idea of ‘cutting through the fluff’ – I saw how advertising agencies would often use pretence to talk up an idea and then charge a bomb for it. I wanted to provide a good honest service, that people would feel comfortable working with and feel good about recommending to a friend or colleague.
"Being 100% Kiwi owned with all services completed in NZ is also important – we don’t send any work overseas like some other web design companies do, as we’d prefer to keep a New Zealander working, even if it means making less profit at the end of the day.”
Today Sue juggles her roles – working as a designer/director at Rubble and as a Mum to a busy wee boy! Life is never boring…
